HMS Shark, later Ub no 1, was Sweden's first
submarine . It was built under great secrecy at Stockholm's naval shipyards
and was launched on July 16th 1904 . The submarine was constructed by Carl
Richson and weighed 107 tons. Richson had experience of the U.S. shipbuilding
and Jaws bears clear similarities with the U.S. Navy's first submarine,
USS Holland, which was constructed by the U.S. verksamme Irishman John
Philip Holland . The drawings were established by King Oscar II November
28, 1902. Reichstag granted in 1902 an appropriation of EUR 400 000 for
the submarine acquisition and the same year was also established drawing
and calculation materials. Periscope manufactured by the firm Officine
Galileo in Florence, and was installed in the shark before departure from
Galärvarvet in Stockholm. Jaws was originally powered by a kerosene
engine type compression-ignition engine via a generator provided power
for an electric motor that drove the electric mtoor that drove the propeller.
The generator also charged batteries used to drive the submarine in operation
underwater. At a rebuild in 1916, when even the hull shape was changed
to improve submarine's surface properties, changed the gas engine replaced
with a diesel engine.
The new addition to the marine arsenal was immediately
ready for war when the Navy was in the midst of preparations for a possible
use in connection with union crisis with Norway . During the First World
War , she worked as a platform for training of new submarine crews. The
shark definitely demobilized in 1919 and decommissioned in 1922. Today
is a submarine museum ship and are in an extension to the Naval Museum
in Karlskrona where it along with HMS Neptune (NEP) will be part of a new
exhibition about the Swedish submarine force that opens the summer of 2014. |
